Weekly Round Up w/c 22nd February

Well, the holiday seems far behind us after such a busy week of learning! This week in Maths we have continued with division but learnt the method of short division for dividing a 3-digit number by a one-digit number. We had to use our times table facts to help us and then we moved on to using these skills to solve problems at the end of the week.

For our project work, Angry Earth, we have started to look think about climate change and the impact that humans are having on the earth. We started this topic by discussing the idea of ‘global interdependence’ – that many of the problems we face now are global problems which can only be solved by countries working together.

In Literacy we started looking at themes linked to our new book ‘The Man Who Walked Between the Towers’. We looked at the history of the Twin Towers, as well as considered what we’d say to Philippe if we knew his plans in advance and had the opportunity to talk him out of his amazing stunt.

So, it’s over to you, 5SL.  What really challenged you and what did you learn this week?

Have a lovely weekend!

Weekly Round Up (w/c 8th February)

This week we finished our work on the Unforgotten Coat by finishing writing our own stories about a refugee joining our class. We also took some time to edit our work and improve our sentences.

In Maths we looked at multiplication and division. We multiplied 3-digit numbers by a 2-digit number. Then for division, we used chunking to divide a 3 digit number by a 2-digit number, using our known number facts. We then put our skills to the test by tackling word problems.

We also worked hard on our Mother’s Day portraits, which are coming on well. We worked carefully to apply the paint to give our pictures texture and plenty of colour. We’ll post pictures of the finished products soon!

Over to you 5SL, what did you learn this week or what was important in your learning this half term?

Invitation to Write

Look at the picture (copies are in your classroom). Before you write, think about the following details: What is the story behind this picture? What do you notice? What is happening/has just happened/is about to happen? Write a 100 word short story about it. Don’t forget to write a draft copy and have it checked first.

Weekly Round Up (w/c 1st February)

In Maths this week we used our times table facts to do mental multiplication and division calculations. We then went on to multiply two-digit numbers by 3-digit numbers.

We have nearly finished our book ‘The Unforgotten Coat’ and are now using ideas from the story to write our own stories of a new person entering our class. Thinking about the theme of the book, we also took some time to talk about refugees and try to understand what it means to be a refugee.

For our project we carried on learning about the Earth – looking at physical changes to the Earth’s environment.

We were also lucky enough to have a Chinese Calligraphy workshop in preparation for Chinese New Year on Monday 8th. Have you seen our photos?

So, 5SL, can you tell me what you learnt? What did you find challenging and why? What did you find the most interesting and why?

Weekly Round Up w/c 25th January

This week in 5SL we have continued to work on the Unforgotten Coat in Literacy. Two of the main characters are from Mongolia, so we researched the country, including it’s History, Customs, Geography and Climate. We then used this information to write non-chronological reports.

In Maths we have been working with decimals and place value. We used our knowledge of place value in these numbers to add them and also round to the nearest tenth or whole number.

We’ve continued with our project ‘Angry Earth’, by looking at the Earth itself. We have been looking in detail at different locations across the planet and describing what those places are like. We also learned more about the planet; looking a the tilt of the Earth and understanding why we have seasons.

Over to you, 5SL, what did you find challenging or most enjoy in your learning this week?
